May 16, 2007

Today bad weather brought a flurry of calls for the Malvern Volunteers, taking in 5 calls in just under an hour. The first call came at 15:37 for an automatic fire alarm in the unit block of Jorrocks Ln. Just 4 minutes later the 2nd call for Station 4 was dispatched for wires down in the 700 Block of Monument Road. Within minutes reports of the wires causing the back deck to smoke were received and the County upgraded the assignment to a building fire and added Station 5 (East Whiteland) for a full company to respond. Due to the response mandated by the building fire, Station 54 (Goshen) for 1 engine was dispatched to assist at the Fire Alarm on Jorrocks Ln. Units arrived on Monument Road to find a pillar on the back deck smoking, apparently from a lightning strike. Crews found the bottom of the pillar to be hot with a Thermal Imaging Camera and removed part of the post to expose some wires and a junction box. Crews examined the box, cut the breaker and began to take up.

While crews responded to and handled the previous calls, just one minute later at 15:42 Hrs the Company's 3rd simultaneous call was dispatched for the odor investigation inside at a residence in the 100 block of Margaret Ln. The caller reported hearing a terrible cracking noise and could then smell somthing burning. Due to units being tied up on the previous calls Station 3 (Paoli) for an engine was dispatched to assist on this call. Engine 3-5, Chief 3 (Dutter) and Deputy 4 (Patton) arrived and investigated and found no services to be necessary.

As units began to clear up from the building fire on Monument Road, the call for a transformer on fire at Harvey Ln and Paoli Pike came in at 16:03 Hrs. Engine 4-5 cleared and made the response, and arrived on scene with TAC 4 to find a transformer that had blown the top off of itself and caught fire. Engine 4-5 had the county notify PECO as Emergency personnel and fire police from Stations 3 and 4 closed the road and awaited the arrival of PECO.

As crews awaited the arrival of PECO Station 4 was alerted to an automatic fire alarm at Laymens retreat in the 300 block of South Warren Avenue. Rescue 4 and Deputy 4 (Patton) responded to the scene. Deputy 4 found the alarm to be activated by burning insense and recalled the Rescue.
