| EMS frequently responds to 911 calls but does not always transport the patient. Emergency responders are able to evaluate and treat individuals at the scene, often resolving issues before transport is necessary. Common reasons for non-transport include: Patient Refusal:Patients who are alert and able to make decisions may decline transportation after receiving an initial assessment or care. Treat-in-Place Protocols: Some minor medical incidents can be effectively managed at the scene, such as providing sugar for someone experiencing low blood sugar or offering treatment for asthma. Public Assistance: Responders may be called to assist a person who has fallen but is uninjured, helping them without the need for medical transport. Alternate Transport: In certain situations, patients may choose to travel to the hospital or urgent care facility with the help of family or friends rather than by ambulance. Cancelled Calls: If the situation improves or the caller decides no longer to request assistance, the call may be cancelled before the ambulance arrives. |
