Today marks the anniversary of the tragic loss of five volunteer firefighters from the Malvern Fire Company, who were killed in the line of duty on this date in 1931.

The incident occurred while the firefighters were responding to a grass fire on the George Camp farm. A fire truck carrying 16 firefighters lost control and overturned while traveling down King Road, just west of Malvern. Some crew members attempted to jump to safety, while others were thrown against a ditch embankment. The five firefighters who lost their lives were trapped beneath the wreckage. The remaining 11 firefighters on board sustained injuries, with many in critical condition.

At the time, automotive safety features were minimal or non-existent. All of those involved were responding to assist a neighbor in need.

Their sacrifice continues to be honored and remembered in Chester County.
